Objectives

Program Educational Objectives

As defined by ABET, program educational objectives are broad statements that describe what graduates are expected to attain within a few years of graduation. The Computer Science Department at Utah State University has the following program educational objectives. The computer science program of study is designed to provide undergraduates with the knowledge, skills, and tools to reach these educational objectives.

Please note, in the context of the program educational objectives, the ABET use of "options" and the USU CS use of "emphasis" is equivalent.  The word "emphasis" is used here for congruency with the terms most identifiable by students and staff within the department.

Software Development Science Emphasis
 
       The Utah State University Computer Science program, Science Emphasis will prepare its graduates to
  1. Be successful as practicing professionals in diverse career paths or in graduate school.
  2. Be able to apply the principles of computer science, mathematics, and scientific investigation to solve real world problems appropriate to the discipline.
  3. Be effective communicators and team members.
  4. Be active in their profession and participate in continuing education opportunities to foster personal and organizational growth.

Digital Systems Emphasis

        The Utah State University Computer Science program, Digital Systems Emphasis will prepare its graduates to
  1. Be successful as practicing professionals in diverse career paths or in graduate school.
  2. Be able to apply their knowledge of both computer software and hardware to perform effectively in their chosen profession.
  3. Be effective communicators and team members.
  4. Be active in their profession and participate in continuing education opportunities to foster personal and organizational growth.


Software Development Emphasis
 
       The Utah State University Computer Science program, Software Development Emphasis will prepare its graduates to
  1. Be successful as practicing professionals in diverse career paths or in graduate school.
  2. Be able to apply the principles of computer science to the design and development of software systems.
  3. Be effective communicators and team members.
  4. Be active in their profession and participate in continuing education opportunities to foster personal and organizational growth.
 
 
Bioinformatics Emphasis
 
       The Utah State University Computer Science program, Bioinformatics Emphasis will prepare its graduates to
  1. Be successful as practicing professionals in diverse career paths or in graduate school.
  2. Be able to apply the principles of computer science, mathematics, and scientific investigation to solve problems in biological and medical sciences.
  3. Be effective communicators and team members.
  4. Be active in their profession and participate in continuing education opportunities to foster personal and organizational growth.
