A Note from Bartholomew's Spright
Lord Bartholomew is a member of the
Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA).
He neither understands
that he is merely a figment of my imagination, nor that he is anywhere but in
mid-14th century England. He doesn't quite understand how he gets from one
place to the next, but he has long since learned to trust his spirit, or "spright"
as he calls me, to guide him through the times for which he has no memory (I personally
think that "consience" would be a better choice, but he hasn't gone
along with me on that yet, probably because no self-respecting conscience would
suggest some of my better action plans).
Bartholomew's 13-year slumber corresponds to a time when I was not active in the SCA.
His usual way of dealing with things he doesn't understand is either to ignore them,
making some quizzical but noncommittal comment, or to simply to create a story that
explains the mystery on his own terms.
Interestingly, I showed Bartholomew the web pages when I had them finished, and he
thought they were an interesting set of scrolls. Apparently, his vision does not extend
past the edges of the browser window, and he doesn't recognize the term "links" either.
In fact, he doesn't appear to see them at all unless they are an integral part of the text.
Still, they are HIS web pages, so I've written them the way he wants them. I apologize if you
find it confusing, but sometimes he can be a real pain about stuff like that.
